The background is that after she went to the hospital for an alcohol-related pancreas problem, he sent her a gift basket. Turns out she has money problems too:

You: You’re not…why not?
BF: Because she made me mad.
You: Uh, if she hadn’t ticked you off, you’d send her another basket?
BF: No.
You: Why not?
BF: Because it’s too expensive.
You: Wait, so if she hadn’t made you mad and it weren’t too expensive, you’d send her another one?
BF: No, you’re making me nervous.
