My husband's brother has a baby soon. We can maintain, look to pass, as they do now, and send a gift and I what?

Ok he is his only Brother and his senior by a few yrs. He lives in Canada and we are on good terms with them. I like my SIL and we get along great. It's not like we are always on the phone, But she and I talk for hours if we are talking about. This is her first child and it's going to be a girl. I wonder if I should send a gift you give on the day she was born or are a couple of days before or after. I really think I should as this is his only sister and a great moment of celebration for us all. I'm planning on it a little more expensive how to give baby jewelry when I go to meet the baby herself. But now my question is, what shall I send? I would think a baby basket?
