Closet Organization Ideas

LGBT: Would you work at a Catholic organization/school?
I was just wondering about your views. If a gay or lesbian person has the chance to apply for a job with a Catholic organization or school would you say that’s a bad idea? The background is that this is a close friend of mine who is lesbian and not out of the closet at work but is out in her personal life. It’s a teaching position and she would have to teach some Bible study as well as her main subject which is math. She is Catholic but more in name than practice. She feels she has a good chance for the job because the job has been advertised and then re-advertised and she thinks they are having trouble finding a qualified person. She isn’t comfortable with the fact that the Catholic church refuses to marry her. She is single, but one day hopes to marry a woman.
Is she dumb to pursue work at this place? She is on the fence she says and can argue both ways.
She is sort of leaning against the job because she feels she’d feel uncomfortable in the job.
Well, my wife is Catholic & married to me. And she did work at a Catholic HS for 2yrs until the economy took a downturn. Since she was still new compared to other teachers, she was part of the 1st few to be let go.
It was the same scenario as your friend: out in personal life but not professional. My wife loves teaching, but it was a struggle to keep your outside life private/duck & avoid questions that everyone else could answer (so & so is engaged!! Are you married? What are you doing this weekend/how was your weekend). She attends Mass regularly (the majority of Sundays & Holy Days of Obligation throughout the year) & is very strong in her faith. She loved the chance to teach in the tennants of her faith.
But she was miserable. She thought she could do the double life, but it was hard, especially after marrying me & trying to find out if I could be added to her health insurance without outing herself to her personnel clerk at her school. There was also the issue of the school’s “moral code” which was very vague, but basically implied that teachers should conduct themselves in line with Church doctrine & teachings (which would mean no gays OR, at the most, no gays that aren’t celibate) & that employees could be terminated if they were found to violate these rules. It wore her down, & teaching just wasn’t fun anymore because of what she had to deal with outside the classroom.
It is the equivalent to what any gay service member deals with under Dont Ask, Dont Tell. I dealt with that during my 12yrs in the Army, & told my wife of what I dealt with. I supported her decision to start teaching. If it weren’t for the budget, she would have resigned before the start of year 3.
After seeing what my wife went through, I would tell your friend to look elsewhere for work. The Church put this burden upon themselves to limit who they want to hire. Your friends should not subject herself to that type of turmoil just over a job. I know the economy is rough, but keeping sane is underrated.
