Dried Fruit Gift
Q’s about mailing food to Berlin, Germany from the US in a care package…?
What are the food items that I absolutely cannot mail? Can I mail ramen, or would that be considered “pasta” (not allowed) by customs?
This is intended to be a personal gift, and I’d also like to send dried fruits and cookies, crackers, etc. Does the recipient have to pay a fee to customs to receive his package?

@My world: No, this is not an APO. Would ramen be considered “pasta”?
@Visit-Rostock: Yes, I’d pay all fees to ship the pkg, but there are fees involved for the recipient if the contents of the parcel are valued over xxx amount of money. That is what I’m concerned about.
Does the recipient have access to an APO box, or getting their mail at the Embassy? If so, there will be no taxes involved.
If the recipient is receiving mail on the economy, then import taxes may apply.
Since you will label the package as a gift, and are sending it around Christmas, the Deutsche Bundespost (official mail) will probably look the other way on the taxes.
Don’t send meat, cheese, coffee or dried fruit unless it is commercially produced. Even then, the meat and cheese should be avoided. Pasta is also forbidden based on the fact that it is flammable. Anything that could combust, explode, or leak is forbidden.
Everything else should be OK. Someone provided a link to Zoll (German Customs), but I would also check with DHL (http://www.dhl-usa.com/home/Home.asp). They carry for the Bundespost.
