Wine Tasting – How To Host a Blind Wine Tasting Party
Wine tastings are a fun and great way to get together with friends, enjoy some great wines, eat a little food, and just have fun in general. While a normal wine tasting with great wines, great cheeses, and great friends can be a lot of fun, sometimes you need to spice things up a little bit. One of the easiest and most economical ways to do this is to host a blind wine tasting party. The people who attend the party need not be blindfolded, but the wines poured will be placed in a black or brown bag in order to conceal their identity. Here are a few tips on how to host a blind wine tasting party.
One of the most important things in hosting a blind wine tasting party is to pick a theme for your blind wine tasting party. One idea for a wine tasting theme is to pick a certain country and choose different varietals for said country. An example of this would be picking a different Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot for Argentina. This would cover the red wine portion of the blind wine tasting. Then you could choose different white wines from Argentina such as Chardonnay, Torrontes, and Cabernet Blanc. You can print off a short pamphlet with info on the region and its varietals to make things a bit easier for your guests.
You can also play a guessing game based on the different varietals. Place 3-4 different red wine varietals such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bonarda in different glasses. Have each wine taster try each wine and try and guess which varietal is which. For white wines you can use Chardonnay, Chablis, Torrontes, and Pinot Grigio.
You can also have your guests guess the price of each wine. This is a great way to be not judge a wine based on its price. There are many high quality wines at great prices from countries such as Argentina. There are many wine snobs who believe that a higher priced bottle is always going to be tastier than a lower priced bottle. South American countries have shown that this is not always true.
A good way to encourage participation is to give out a prize to the person who guesses correctly. The prize can be something small such as a corkscrew or a wine book, or it can be a bottle of wine or perhaps even a case of wine from a wine club. Giving out a prize shows good sportsmanship on your part and will send one of your good friends home with a smile.
Trying out blind wine tasting was one of the best things I did in my life. It has brought me endless amounts of joy and happiness that I cannot even express it in this short article. You must try it yourself!
