How do I send cheese through US mail?
My mother-in-law visiting me in Wisconsin bought some fresh cheeses from a dairy shop to take back to Florida as gifts, but forgot to take them with her on the airplane. I want to send them to her by mail, but my googling hasn’t helped me figure out the best way to do so. I know it’s possible because you can order cheese buy mail from many shops, they just don’t explain how they ship it.
I ship and receive most of my cheese for business via FedEx and UPS personally.
The key concern is going to be spoilage due to temperature; Depending on the size, shape and amount of cheese you’ll need several ice packs. Most places that ship will have some sort of gel based ice pack that they include, and most tend to ship overnight or second day depending on the time of year and current temp.
Use styrofoam to line the box (it’s lightweight so doesn’t add much to freight costs), and it will go a long way to keeping the cheese cool when properly packed in conjunction with the ice packs.
One thing to keep in mind with the ice packs is that they’re going to sweat. Make sure the cheese you’re shipping is wrapped up well so it doesn’t experience any problems as a result of the water. You can ease the process by wrapping the ice packs in a few layers of paper towels or newspaper as well to keep things cool, yet not wet.
